Custom Orthotics Q&A

Why do I need custom orthotics?

Chances are, you have one leg that’s slightly longer than the other or one foot that seems to be about half a size bigger or a different shape. These natural (and entirely normal) characteristics can cause misalignment issues in your ankles, knees, hips, and lower back, causing chronic pain not just in your feet but all over your body.

Custom orthotics provide support to stabilize your skeletal system and realign your entire body, which can help prevent chronic pain issues. Dr. Suykerbuyk may even recommend custom orthotics if you have:

  • Bunions or hammertoes
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Sports injuries
  • Ankle instability
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel pain
  • Arthritis

Custom orthotics are often recommended for people with diabetes to prevent foot wounds and off-load pressure when a wound is present.

How long does it take to get custom orthotics?

At AZ Choice Foot and Ankle, you undergo a thorough foot and ankle evaluation to determine which type of custom orthotics are best for you. Dr. Suykerbuyk then creates molds of each of your feet using a plaster material or high-definition 3D imaging. This visit usually takes about 30-60 minutes.

Once your molds are complete, Dr. Suykerbuyk sends your file to the podiatric lab to fabricate your prescription orthotics. Within about two to three weeks, your custom orthotic inserts arrive in the office. Dr. Suykerbuyk may have you come in for a short follow-up appointment to ensure your new orthotics are comfortable and supportive.

When do I need to wear my custom orthotics?

Ideally, you would wear your custom orthotics every day. Because custom orthotics help relieve chronic pain, injury, or complications resulting from an ongoing condition, he encourages you to wear them daily to prevent and relieve discomfort.

If you’re worried that your custom orthotics may not fit into each pair of shoes you wear, let Dr. Suykerbuyk know. He may recommend specialized heel or arch supports that you can wear for short periods, like when you need to wear dress shoes.

You can get fitted for prescription orthotics right in the office at AZ Choice Foot and Ankle. To schedule a consultation for custom orthotics, call the office, or book online today.
